Kenya and South Africa lead the development of electric vehicles in Africa

Relevant data show that in 2023, China's exports of new energy vehicles to Africa increased by 291% year-on-year...

In recent years, the African continent has developed rapidly in the field of new energy vehicles, attracting the attention of global automakers. African governments have introduced relevant policies, including reducing or exempting import tariffs on new energy vehicles, providing car purchase subsidies, and building charging infrastructure to support and promote the popularization and application of new energy vehicles. Relevant reports predict that by 2027, the scale of the African electric vehicle market will reach US$21.4 billion, and the average annual compound growth rate from 2022 to 2027 is expected to reach 10.2%.

The Kenyan government launched the "Electric Transportation" plan in 2023, aiming to vigorously develop electric motorcycles, electric tricycles and electric vehicles. It is an important measure for Kenya to achieve green transportation and reduce air pollution. The Kenyan government also plans to build more electric vehicle charging stations to increase the coverage of charging facilities and provide support for the popularization of new energy vehicles. Data shows that the number of electric vehicle registrations in Kenya has increased rapidly from 475 in 2022 to 2,694 in 2023. At the same time, the overall proportion of new energy vehicles is also increasing. As of December 2023, new energy vehicles accounted for 1.62% of the more than 160,000 newly registered motor vehicles in Kenya.

As a major economy in Africa, South Africa has also performed well in the field of new energy vehicles. The "Green Policy for New Energy Vehicles" issued by South Africa has established a clear policy basis for the local production of electric vehicles and their components. In addition, South Africa has also issued the "White Paper on Electric Vehicles", which proposed a number of incentives to provide direction for the transformation and development of South Africa's automotive industry. According to data from the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa), from 2021 to 2023, the sales of new energy vehicles in South Africa increased significantly, from 896 in 2021 to 4,674 in 2022, and then to 7,746 in 2023. The proportion of new energy vehicles in the new car market in South Africa has continued to rise, reaching 1.45% in 2023.

At present, the new energy vehicle market in many African countries is still in its infancy, mainly relying on imports, and the market for related products is huge. At the same time, with the improvement of economic development level, localized production has become a future trend, and countries such as South Africa and Kenya have taken the lead. China's exports of new energy vehicles to Africa have increased year by year, playing an important role in the African market. Relevant data show that in 2023, China's exports of new energy vehicles to Africa will increase by 291% year-on-year. Chinese automakers such as BYD, Great Wall, Geely, and Dongfeng have entered the African market. In addition to directly exporting automobile products, they are also actively seeking opportunities for localized production to jointly promote the development of Africa's new energy vehicle industry.
